Oncologic emergencies have rapidly evolved in medicine over the last 10-15 years. It continues to develop in parallel with evolving cancer treatments and interventions. In addition to treating complications related to standard/traditional chemotherapies, the development of numerous new cancer treatment modalities presents a whole new field of patient complaints that are just now starting to be seen in emergency departments across the country. With very few dedicated cancer hospital emergency rooms, patients presenting with cancer emergencies are often inappropriately triaged, diagnosed, undertreated, or often simply referred back to their respective oncologists without resolution of their emergent issues.
This two-day, live hybrid conference will bring together specialists from across all areas of the cancer treatment spectrum in order to update and enhance the ability of emergency department providers and staff on how to prepare for the common and not-so-common emergency scenarios with which a cancer patient could present. Each session will include didactic lectures followed by a live Q&A session.
This conference offers participants the choice of attending either in person or virtually and is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses involved in the treatment and management of patients with active malignancies/cancers who present with acute complaints in an emergent room setting.
- Identify and recognize the most common presenting complaints of cancer patients in emergency rooms.
- Discuss current and developing cancer therapeutics with respect to their side-effects and complications.
- Recognize the current limitations and challenges that remain in efficiently addressing cancer patient emergencies.
