By Barbara Hochstrasser
Burnout refers to a state of risk that can lead to psychological and somatic consequential diseases if chronified by a continuous stress load. The burnout syndrome is characterised by a pronounced exhaustion with impaired recovery capacity, accompanied by stress symptoms. Reduced resilience, vegetative symptoms and cognitive disorders can be associated with it. So far, only a few comprehensive studies on the therapy of burnout exist, although treatment recommendations are absolutely needed given its prevalence.
Barbara Hochstrasser has developed, implemented and researched the first integrated treatment program for patients with burnout and exhaustive depression within Switzerland. Based on the current state of research, clinical practice and her years of experience, she explains basic information about burnout syndrome, with different models and risk factors as well as complex symptomatology and aspects in diagnosis. Based on this, Barbara Hochstrasser presents and evaluates possible forms of therapy and their effectiveness.
The author considers not only psychotherapeutic interventions, but also body- and experience-oriented therapies, mindfulness exercises, yoga, meditation, qigong, shiatsu, sports, biofeedback, complementary medical applications or professional rehabilitation and reintegration programs. This book is a comprehensive reference work for guidance in the treatment of burnout.
